Book Review: Skill Builder (Science) Series by Sonia Mehta

Skill Builder Science
Author: Sonia Mehta
Genre: Children’s book (Academic)
Publishers: Puffin Books

Science is one such subject that needs hands-on experience as a teaching methodology. But not every child gets the benefit of experiencing science and learning through activities. However, Sonia Mehta has now come up with another series of books that have enough activities, puzzles, high order thinking questions and inferential questions that will aid in improving the analytical and observation skills of young children.

The books step-up the learning process as they are available in 4 parts. Each level deals with a different topic.

Book 1 has a collation of topics like types of weather, hygiene habits, types of landforms, parts of a plant, various species of animals and even colours of the rainbow. The activities and questionnaires aim at honing information retrieval, listening and observational skills.

Book 2 elaborates on the same topics and provides more details on topics like biodegradable and non-biodegradable plastics, description of parts of a plant, basics of the first-aid kit, magnetism and much more. Even though the activities just provide an overview of the topic, they have been crafted in such a way that the children are sure to find them interesting.

Book 3 goes a level up and explains about the planets, water cycle, measurement, essential nutrients and about the atmosphere as well. This level aims at honing analytical skills by exposing the children to a comparatively challenging scenario.

Book 4 is a slightly advanced version that talks about the structure of a tooth, the forms of energy, forces in nature, rocks and minerals and more about our body. This book is again a level-up.

Based on the curiosity and capability of the child, parents can opt for the right level and encourage their children to learn by questioning more.

Overall, this series is good. It will definitely come handy to the parents whose babies are in 2-3 grade or even younger. They will be able to empower their kids and help them grasp Science concepts easily.
