Book Review: Vahana by Devdutt Pattanaik

Vahana
Author: Devdutt Pattanaik
Publisher: Rupa Publications

This is for the very first time that I have got a lovely children’s book by Rupa Publishers for review. Known for his knowledge of mythology, religion, management and folklore, Devdutt Pattanaik has already established a niche that not many authors have achieved yet. A fan of his pragmatic explanations and mythological interpretations, I was caught unawares when I got to know that his new book is all about illustrations and colour.

As children, we are seldom told the reason why mythology has what it has. Thus, we end up learning rather than knowing the stories. This book ‘Vahana’ narrates stories of various Gods who befriended animals so that they could travel around the world and the animals could learn the magic trick of not being hungry. A win-win situation led to the formation of the eternal bond between the Gods and the animals. Easy narrative and an interesting way to retell the stories make this book all the more interesting. The plus point is that the book comes with beautiful illustrations that can be coloured too.

Overall, Vahana is a good way to impart knowledge about the animals that belonged to various Gods. Children are going to love this colouring book. Kudos to the author for coming up with this engaging book for the young ones.
