Book Review: My Suitcase Heart by Deepti Singh Gupta

My Suitcase Heart
Author: Deepti Singh Gupta
Publisher: Rupa Publications
Rating: 3/5

My Suitcase Heart is a sweet novella that exposes the readers to a wide number of emotions that, when simultaneously felt, trigger a burst of anxiety and apprehension. Revolving around the lives of several friends who, by the call of fate and cupid, have changed roles in each other’s life, this story will transport the readers back to the days of boyhood when the heart longs to be owned by the right person.

While Samar and Mahi struggle to mend the tensed ropes holding their relationship, Samar’s sister, Ahana, takes her own time to come to grips with the grim reality of her married life. Years later, when this assorted group of friends comes together on a cruise, things seem to be falling flat in the beginning. It takes a pandemic, several broken desires and a reality check to bring the suitcase heart home. Finally. The plot is predictable yet there are enough twists to keep the readers entertained. I did feel that the characters appeared more like caricatures and their past was less explored.

Caught in the web of overwhelming emotions, this short story throws light on the fragility of relationships and the power of love. It is strange how our deepest fears become the trigger point for our love. It is strange that this love we feel is so powerful that it can weather any storm. Overall, My Suitcase Heart is a light read that is sure to take you down the memory lane.

Best wishes to the author!
