Book Review: Rukmini by Saiswaroopa Iyer

Rukmini
Author: Saiswaroopa Iyer
Publisher: Rupa Publications
Rating: 4.5/5

With a magnificent cover and an intriguing plotline, Rukmini is mythological fiction that is based on the life of one of the fiercest and bold women of that time, Rukmini, Krishna’s wife. Rukmini is a character in mythology who is seldom spoken about or discussed. Her indomitable spirit is praised yet her choices are questioned and critically judged. This book presents the readers with an account of what transpired behind so many decisions that Rukmini took right from the one of eloping with Krishna and standing by his side at times of trouble.

Even though Rukmini’s marriage with Krishna was on the cards, her brother, Rukmi, was against their alliance. Hence, she requested Krishna to elope with her and get married. This was the beginning of her life as a woman whose choices shaped her future. Caught amidst the whirlpool of being a dutiful wife and being treated as an equipped life partner, Rukmini never fails to make her voice heard whether it is a matter of the heart or mind. Krishna, too, acknowledges her willpower and courage and gives her the rightful place beside him. The story highlights the importance of having the courage to take a stand for one’s beliefs and not hesitating to claim what’s truly yours. The narrative is simple yet striking.

Although I am not an avid reader of mythology, Rukmini’s story was successfully able to captivate my attention because of the poised and unbiased storytelling. Secondly, the protagonist is sure to inspire many out there. Hence, this book is worth a try!

Best wishes to the author!
